«Groupama» jager

Etter å ha tatt hva som syntes å være en avgjørende ledelse på denne 7. etappen fra Miami til Lisboa, ble «Groupama» innhentet av konkurrentene og lå en stund sist i feltet, før den franske båten igjen har fått opp dampen og passerte først «Sanya», deretter «Telefonica» og «Camper». Nå står «Puma» for tur. «Groupama» har halt innpå jevnt og trutt og lå 0400 UTC bare mindre enn fem nautiske mil bak. Plasseringen blir nå viktig for «Groupama» som må ha en båt mellom seg og «Telefonica» for å overta ledelsen sammenlagt.

«Groupama» tar en viss risiko ved å være den sydligste båten i feltet, mens de øvrige seiler mer eller mindre på linje med stø kurs for Lisboa. Før mål regner man med at båtene skal gjennom et lite høytrykk med lettere og vekslende vind føt det igjen øker på før målgang.

SEA: 3-5m, increasing.

WEATHER: Variable cloud cover with scattered showers. Squalls becoming likely in the afternoon and evening.

Between 38N/43N and 20W/15W

WIND: SW 15-20 backing S with time and easing to 10-15, especially near 15W. Later in the period, becoming S 20-25 near 20W, decreasing significantly with distance east to 5-10 near 15W.

SEA: 2-4m

WEATHER: Fine except increasing clouds and a chance of showers from the west later in the period.

Between 38N/43N and 15W to Finish

WIND: West of a line from 39N/15W to 43N/12W, initially SW 5-15. Easing and becoming light and variable wind time.

East of a line from 39N/15W to 43N/12W, light and variable except N 10-20 between 12W and the Iberian coast. Becoming NNE/N 15-20 throughout the area except 15-25 around 10W.

SEA: 2-3m

WEATHER: Mainly fine.

OUTLOOK FOR THURSDAY (31-MAY-2012)

As noted above, strong low pressure will be slow to vacate the central North Atlantic. Gales will be present around the low center, with strong S/SSE winds ahead of the cold front advancing east from 25W to 22W. Meanwhile the ridge will be splitting with time off Cape Finisterre as the Bay of Biscay high pressure shifts north, and a more consistent anti-cyclonic flow from E tending SE the S winds developing north of about 41N in the ridge axis which will be running north-south along 16W. Again, stronger N/NNW winds are forecast off the Iberian coast, possibly easing at the coast with the thermal low shifting to the coast with time.
